Care guide
Care guide
All Dogs & Horses leather products are crafted from high quality European leather, chosen for its durability, comfort and natural beauty. With the right care, leather will soften, develop character and last for many years.
Cleaning
To maintain the leather’s natural finish, clean occasionally using a leather cleaner, saddle soap, or dubbin. Apply with a soft cloth or sponge and gently remove any dirt or residue.
For light cleaning, a damp cloth with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner can also be used. Always test cleaning products on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure the colour remains stable.
Conditioning
After cleaning, apply a leather conditioner or restorative such as Neat’s Foot Oil or a beeswax-based product (for example Renapur or Leather Genie).
Conditioning helps restore the leather’s natural lustre, keeps it supple, and protects it from drying out or cracking.
Water & Drying
Leather can tolerate occasional exposure to water, but it should not remain wet for extended periods.
If your item becomes wet, allow it to air dry naturally at room temperature. Do not place leather items on radiators or near direct heat sources, as this can cause the leather to stiffen or crack.
Once dry, applying a leather conditioner will help restore flexibility and protect the surface.
Metal Hardware
Brass hardware may naturally develop a darker patina over time, sometimes referred to as “living brass”. Many owners appreciate this as part of the character of real brass.
If preferred, brass or metal fittings can be polished with a metal cleaner such as Brasso. Take care to keep cleaning products away from your dog or horse and avoid inhalation of fumes.
Regular Inspection
We recommend regular hands-on inspection of all leather items to check for wear and tear, particularly around stitching, buckles and clips. Routine care helps ensure the continued comfort and safety of your animal.
Important
Avoid allowing leather to come into contact with chemical products, including spot-on flea treatments, as these may damage the leather or cause colour transfer. This applies to all leather surfaces.
